Scottish Highland Games Near Orlando

For the last 37 years competitors and spectators alike have gathered in Winter Springs, FL – just north of Orlando - to witness the Scottish Highland Games.

The original games, which is said to go back to 1703 in Scotland, have brought traditional contests to Central Florida.

These games are a way of celebrating Scottish and Celtic culture and, especially that of the Scottish Highlands.

The annual games are held over three days during the third weekend in January.

Caber Toss, Quidditch & Other Fun Things

The primary focus of the Highland games is athletics. In essence they are the reason for the games and without them these annual events would be an ancient relic.

The most popular of the lot is the caber toss – involving running with a long pine long that you must throw forward and land as close to 12 o’clock as possible.

If you have seen a Harry Potter film you may have heard of the most popular game at Hogwarts, Quidditch.

The Central Florida Scottish Highland Games is the first Highland Games in the world to include Quidditch in their schedule of events.

A dance competition is open to adults and children alike.

Categories include the Highland Fling, Sword Dance and Scottish Lilt.

There are kids games and other spectators.

Entertainment is also very popular at the Highland Games, kilt playing bagpipers will have you up and about as they play crowd favorites.

Fiddlers, harp circles and Celtic bands are also common forms of entertainment.

True Scottish Tradition

From the Scottish Country Dance to the shortbread competition there is a feeling of tradition and pride in all that takes place this year.

You do not have to be Scottish in order to enjoy the Scottish Highland Games and that means you should pack your coolers and gather your friends for an exciting day without dealing with the crowds of the theme parks.

On Friday the events begin around 5pm with the music playing beyond 10pm.

On Saturday things get off to an earlier start, by 8am the gates are open and the last event of the day begins at 8pm.

On Sunday the gates will be open by 8:45am and the events will go from 9am until the closing ceremonies begin at 5pm.

The park is located at 1000 East SR 434 Winter Springs, Florida 32708.
