Orlando Restaurant Chef-Owners Receive James Beard Award

The James Beard Foundation announced on Monday, May 6, the winners in the 2013 Restaurant and Chef Awards and is the culinary equivalent of the Oscars.

Last Years Event

The winners were announced at New York’s Lincoln Center and included honors to two Orlando chef restaurant owners.

Melissa Kelly of PRIMO at the JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes, received Best Chef Northeast for her restaurant in Rockland, Maine and Emeril Lagasse, chef and TV personality, of Emeril’s Orlando and of Universal City Walk and Emeril’s Tchoup Chop at Universal’s Loews Royal Pacific Resort received the Humanitarian of the Year for his New Orleans based Emeril Lagasse Foundation.

Melissa Kelly

Melissa Kelly grew up in Long Island and began cooking in her grandmother’s kitchen and attended the Culinary Institute of America.

Her approach, at both PRIMO locations, is an organic contemporary Italian cuisine.

Her restaurant in Orlando has it’s own private organic garden, on the hotel property, as well as using locally sourced produce.

Emeril Lagasse Foundation

The Emeril Lagasse Foundation was established in 2002.

The foundation supports nonprofit organizations that provide culinary training, life skills and cultural enrichment to create opportunities in communities where his restaurants are located.

The Foundation provides a unique opportunity to provide young people unique opportunities to look towards a hopeful future and creative cooking.

Take a night out and visit one or both of these chef’s restaurants to honor their great achievements.

Emeril’s Orlando will be offering a three-course $30 menu promotion, during June and July, featuring recipes from two of his cookbooks.
