Deal Reached on Orlando Soccer Stadium

Updated: 14 Aug 2013 03:55:16 AM

The recent Tourist Development Council held in downtown Orlando yielded some major news.

Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer have agreed to a multi-million dollar package that will complete the funding for the construction of a multi-purpose soccer stadium in downtown Orlando.

This puts the city one-step closer to gaining its very own a Major League Soccer team.

The deal also includes several major boosts to Orlando’s tourist infrastructure and is partially funded by the city’s lucrative tourist tax.

Funding

Under the agreed, conditions, Orlando’s tourism and marketing will get an addition $25 million dollar boost over the next 5-years.

Another $25 million will go to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, which is slated for completion in 2018.

Finally the Citrus Bowl and Convention Centre will get an additional $12 million and $10 million dollar boost for renovations, respectively.

This is of course all on top of the funding for a new soccer stadium in downtown Orlando, which is largely contingent on the city securing an MLS team.

2015

The ultimate goal is to land a team by 2013, and have the team playing by 2015.

The entire deal is expected to provide a healthy boost to Orlando’s economy, and make the city a more viable destination for international visitors.

However, opponents of the deal argue that not enough detail has been provided to the public.

The mayors have provided assurances that the details of the deal will be hammered out in the coming weeks.
