ImageWorks - The “What If” Labs

ImageWorks has been a part of Disney World since the early 1980s, and has always included a number of interactive attractions and exhibits geared towards kids and kids at heart.

Refurbished in the late 1990s, the attraction reopened in 1999 as the ImageWorks - The “What If” Labs and is the perfect follow-up activity to the Journey Into Imagination With Figment.

Both attractions are located within Future World at Epcot.

Figment

Figment is at the center of the Imagination Institute and ImageWorks.

The friendly character takes the shape of a purple dragon and is a favorite with small children.

If you are first attending the Journey Into Imagination With Figment as recommended, this colorful tour will take you through five different labs featuring our 5 senses - sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell.

As the story goes, Dr. Nigel Channing is the director of the Imagination Institute and has set out to prove that imagination is captured by the 5 senses.

However, Figment has other plans and sabotages some of Dr. Channing’s experiments.

Just outside the exit of the attraction are the ImageWorks “What If” Labs.

Figment’s Melody Maker

This dedicated play area compliments the tour of the Imagination Institute and is an excellent place to let younger children interact and explore exhibits and games based on Figment.

A more recent 2002 upgrade to the labs has made the area even more interactive.

Though there are many engaging exhibits at the “What If” Labs, there are several family favorites.

Figment’s Melody Maker is a certified hit with kids and allows them to conduct their own orchestra.

Music is played based on your arm movements and the attraction often proves to be enticing enough for parents to join in as well.

As another musical feature, the Stepping Stones is another popular exhibit.

Here, you and your children can create your own melodies by jumping onto different stones.

Visual Features

The ImageWorks “What If” Labs also includes several visual features for visitors.

There is a play exhibit where you can record yourself on camera and play it back in slow motion.

Figment fans can also use a series of touch screens to create their own Figments and email them to family and friends.

The program allows you to change Figment’s color, wings, body, head and several other features.

Of course, no trip to the “What If” Labs is complete without taking home a souvenir of your trip.

Right next to the labs is a gift shop where you can purchase a plush version of Figment to remember your journey with him.

There are plenty of fun and interactive attractions at the ImageWorks “What If” Labs to keep kids entertained for a while.

Together with the Journey Into Imagination With Figment, it stands as a reminder to how magical and amazing imagination and childhood can be.

Though the labs have been designed with smaller children in mind, they really appeal to everyone and capture the true spirit of Disney World.
