Prince Charming Regal Carrousel

As much as Disney World is known for its high-tech rides, there is something special about older rides and attractions.

They evoke a different period in time and expose us all to a piece of history.

Renamed the Prince Charming Regal Carrousel in 2010, this particular ride is a vintage carrousel found in Disney World’s Fantasyland.

Though it is now themed after the Disney film Cinderella, it comes with its own incredible back-story.

The carousel was originally built in 1917 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company.

At the time, they were considered to be one of the best carrousel makers in the world.

Upon its completion, the ride included 90 hand-painted horses.

The entire carousel was handmade and included exquisite wooden detailing.

It was first installed at the Detroit Palace Garden in 1917 and was then moved to the Maplewood Olympic Park in New Jersey.

In 1967, it was purchased by Disney and refurbished.

Disney restored most of the original horses, but had to replace a few of them entirely.

Cinderella and Prince Charming

In order to connect the ride to Cinderella, hand-painted scenes from the film were added to the carousel's panels.

According to the ride’s back-story, Cinderella and Prince Charming have married and settled into a happy life in her beautiful castle.

The prince practices jousting in his free time and constructs wooden horses to help him practice.

Villagers are impressed with his craftsmanship and urge him to build a spinning carousel featuring his wooden horses.

The prince obliges and builds it to include magnificent horses, adorning each with colorful saddles and other accessories.

The Prince Charming Regal Carrousel is open to children of all ages and heights.

The Ride

The ride lasts for two minutes.

Organ music accompanies the spinning ride and adds to its nostalgic appeal.

Lovingly restored by the team at Disney, each horse features its own unique hand-painted elements that often include a saddle, bridle and sword.

Rumor has it that one of the horses on the inner row is Cinderella’s horse.

This horse can be identified by a golden bow on its tail, the rumor has never been acknowledged by Disney.

Each horse bobs up and down slowly as the carousel spins under the shadow of Cinderella’s Castle.

Riders will be treated to a view of flying elephants from the neighboring Dumbo the Flying Elephant attraction.

Anyone who lays eyes on this carrousel will appreciate the craftsmanship that went into its construction.

Sentimental Favorite

Even with all the roller coasters and high tech experiences available at the Magic Kingdom, the Prince Charming Regal Carrousel Attraction remains a sentimental favorite for many.

The ride is great for little ones who may not be up for more daring rides.

A parent or older sibling can accompany children who may not be able to sit and balance on a horse by themselves.

As popular as the ride is with small children, don’t be surprised to see adults on the carrousel.

There are plenty of older people who will enjoy reliving memories from their childhood on this iconic attraction.
