Tomorrowland Speedway at Magic Kingdom

The Tomorrowland Speedway is Magic Kingdom's answer to the original Disneyland attraction Autopia, which has been a major feature at the very first Disneyland at Anaheim ever since the opening day of July 17, 1955.

Magic Kingdom has continued the tradition of Autopia and has also offered its own spin on the original attraction.

Opened on the 1st of October 1971, The Tomorrowland Speedway is as old as the Magic Kingdom itself, although the attraction has undergone multiple renovations and expansions over the years.

On the opening day, The Tomorrowland Speedway was actually known as The Grand Prix Raceway.

As the name suggests, the attraction at Magic Kingdom differed from its older brother in its grand prix car race design as opposed to the more futuristic theme of Autopia at Disneyland.

It took only 2 years for the Speedway to be extended after its opening in 1971, and the attraction remained the same until 1994 when it was renovated quite extensively.

Speedway Renovations

Some of the renovations included changes in the track length and shape; these renovations were prompted by redesign of Tomorrowland as a whole.

In addition, the grand prix car race theme was modified to feature Indy cars instead.

New features were also added such as logos and signs for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as well as the famous Scoring Pylon from the same track.

At this point, the attraction at Magic Kingdom was known as The Tomorrowland Indy Speedway.

In 2008, the Indy part of the name was removed resulting in the name we all know and love today.

As for the ride itself, you can strap yourself in to your own Indy race car and zoom around the 1/2 mile track for nearly 4 minutes.

The track itself is modelled on the prestigious Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is the host for many famous races such as the Indianapolis 500 and the NASCAR Brickyard 400.

As you speed around the track, the design of both track and cars gives you a truly authentic NASCAR feeling.

It's no surprise that The Tomorrowland Speedway at Magic Kingdom is very popular among the male contingent in your family!

Four Lane Track

As you ride around the track you will have a choice of four lanes, so there is plenty of room for everyone.

To ensure safe racing, Disney has provided a guide rail in order to keep each racer in their respective lane.

You will most likely hear screams of excitement from the younger racers who are not yet old enough to drive any kind of vehicle and The Tomorrowland Speedway is the first driving experience for many young children.

The top speed is just 8 miles per hour - enough to provide an exhilarating racing experience without compromising on safety.

The final 'icing on the cake' of The Tomorrowland Speedway is none other than celebrated race commentator Tom Carnegie, who was the voice of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for sixty years.

Tom will give rip-roaring commentary as you whizz around the track!
